My dog is limping on multiple legs. When to get X-rays & pain relief?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 3 years and 2 months old | 115 lbs

Hi! I have a lab/retriever who has had a limp on/off -mostly on- the last few months or so in his back left leg. I assumed it was from too much activity-he’s pretty lazy- on the weekends when a dog friend comes over to play. Well this past weekend he started limping on his from right leg really bad. It’s worse when he gets up from sleeping of course. But the front limo doesn’t seem to be getting better. Is it worth having xrays done, could it just be muscular and how can I manage pain?

Carson is adorable! Thanks for including a picture. The answer as to whether or not x-rays are recommended really depend on your veterinarian's examination. If they find something concerning on exam, then they may recommend taking x-rays. But I would definitely start with having them examine Carson to see what they can find on examination. As far as pain medications, there are a number of good pain medications, but they are all prescription. I am attaching a handout below with more information on pain medications for dogs. (It is discussing arthritis pain, but is a good source of information for pain medications in dogs). I would not recommend giving anything at home until your vet can examine Carson because it may interact with any pain medications that your veterinarian will want to give Carson. https://veterinarypartner.vin.com/default.aspx?pid=19239&id=4951467 Good luck! I hope Carson feels better soon. Thanks for using PetCoach.
