My attic has fleas! What are the best ways to remove them without vacuuming?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

I have a serious flea infestation in my attic. My cats are no longer staying there, but ever since I took care of a friend's cat for a few days, it's gotten worse. I put a product on my pets to protect them and I'm currently using a spray suggested by the vet, that is pretty toxic, so I hope it will kill them, but I need help with the next steps since they're irrirating my skin terribly. I can't use the vacuum because it will cause a blackout. What else do I do?

If you are unable to vacuum, sweep the area thoroughly. Remove any unused fabric or clothing that can be used as bedding for fleas, eggs and larvae. Ventilation is important as well to keep humidity low and to regulate temperature. Treat all your pet's monthly for at least three consecutive months, preferably year round. You can also use food grade diatomaceous earth for the attic. Carefully spread it around, taken care to not breathe it in, leave it down for 6-12 hours then sweep up excess. Do this 2-3 times a week until the infestation is resolved. The DE will dessicate (or dry out) and flea eggs or larvae it comes into contact with. This works best in dry environments.
