Why is my cat scared of the front yard but loves the backyard?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 10 months and 27 days old | 11 lbs

Why does my cat LOVE going in the backyard but is terrified of the front yard? I occasionally will let him out when I let the dogs go out and I have him on a harness or I’m right next to him. When I’m holding him and open the front door he claws me to try to get beck into the house. I’ve gotten some pretty nasty scratches. He’s an inside cat and looks out all of the windows all day.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If the front of the house is more open, louder, has more animal, people and car traffic that could be why. Most back yards are quiet, fenced, tree lined and do not face the road. Most cats are timid and find loud noises very frightening. I wouldn't force the issue and take him out front and risk getting scratched and bitten. Looking out a window is different then being outside. The sounds are muffled and he realizes the protective nature of being indoors. Have a great day!
