My cat's anal gland is red and infected. What are costs and home care?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Mediumhair | Female

My friends cat has what looks like an pooped or absessed anal sac. The area is red pussy and she continually licks it. She doesn't seem to be agressive about it, she let me pick her up and look at her. I was able to see that it looked like a egg. The area around the hole was pink and irritated and the hole was filled with milky puss. We plan to take her to a vet, just wanted to know more information like costs and procedures. If there is any sort of home remedies

Unfortunately costs can vary quite a bit depending on what needs to be done. If it is a "simple" anal gland abscess that has already ruptured, then Coconut might just need antibiotics and pain medications. Again, costs will differ depending on if your friend elects to have injectible medications or if they decide to give oral medications at home. However, if the area is more infected, Coconut may have to be sedated to have the area flushed and explored. The only home care options are to "warm pack" the area with a warm wash cloth applied to the area for up to 5 minutes (as tolerated) and using an e-collar to prevent licking. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
