My cat was unresponsive, eyes open, not breathing. Was he dead?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered

I can home a couple of weeks ago and found my cat unresponsive with his eyes open and mouth open. It didn't seem to me that he was breathin. He was an FIP cat. So I assumed he was dead and took him to my local vet and had his body disposed of. But now I can't help but wonder if he was really dead or just unconscious or in coma.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am very sorry to hear about your little Toby. Every veterinarian would assess a patient to ensure that it was dead or not on arrival when presenting unconscious, and would assess if dead or not before sending for cremation. You can rest easy knowing that Toby would have been dead, also, from what you are describing, he was dead. Unconscious animals will still breath, have reflexes, etc. I am very sorry about Toby.
