Why is my cat peeing and pooping outside the litter box on the carpet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 7 years and 6 months old | 13 lbs

My cat has stopped using his litter box and instead will pee and poo within 3 feet of the litter box on the carpet. We have one other cat who uses it and a second litter box that neither of them have any interest in. The litter box gets cleaned every other day, but he refuses to use it. How can I stop him from ruining the carpet and get him to use the litter box again? Nothing about the litter, litter box, or location has changed since he stopped using it.

I would recommend taking Junior to the vet and having them get some blood work and a urine on him. Sometimes cats start urinating and/or defecating outside the box when there is a medical issue going on. I would rule this out first before stating it is behavioral. I would also recommend getting a third litter box and cleaning the boxes daily. If it is behavioral that would be the best way to start to get him back to using the box. Thank you for submitting your question regarding Rocket. First, he should see a veterinarian to ensure that he does not have a medical problem. Intestinal disease can result in urgency making it difficult to get to the box in time. If this is not the case, he may have a behavioral problem. In this case, ensure you have enough litterboxes. You should have a minimum of three boxes for two cats. Make sure the boxes are located in separate quiet places. Cats can be startled by noises in the box. Most cats prefer uncovered litterboxes. I hope this information helps!
