My new dog ate a sock. What happens if a dog swallows a sock?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | neutered | 75 lbs

We’ve had Charlie for 4 days now, and we are trying to figure out which toys and treats he likes. He hasn’t liked anything so far until he discovered my husbands sock. My other dog enjoys chewing and tugging socks, so we figured it would be fine. Until 5 minutes later we can’t find the sock. We searched high and low, in pretty sure he ate it. What is gonna happen? Is this bad??

This scenario can go one of three ways. You may end up finding the sock and he may not have eaten it at all. This will obviously be the best scenario. The second scenario is he either vomits it up or poops it out. This can happen. The third scenario is he becomes obstructed and needs surgery. I would highly recommend not having him play with socks anymore. Keep a close eye on him. Any vomiting, diarrhea or lethargy I would recommend going to a vet immediately.
