My dog eats yard mushrooms and won't potty. How do I train him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 1 year old | 11 lbs

We have non-poisonous mushrooms in our yard but all our dogs do when they go outside is try to eat them. They won’t go to the bathroom. We don’t have a fenced yard, so we have to take them out on a leash so it’s annoying that they won’t even go when we take them. Then they keep asking to go outside afterward to find more mushrooms. Any advice?

Keep the grass short and pick all the mushrooms up first. YOu can try to take them to the front yard or a different/restricted area that can help. At a year old, they are very playful and have so much puppy in them, it is easy for them to get distracted outside and not go to the bathroom Take a good treat and reward with you, they will learn that when they go they immediately get food and a snack and it can become easier in the long run
