My dog has a scab and bald spot after tick. Is it Lyme disease?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 5 months old | 37 lbs

I pulled a tick off the top of my dogs head right at the start of May. I checked it a few times after looking for red rings but didn’t see any so I forgot about it. Yesterday the wind blew her hair just right and I notice a bald spot with a little scab right where the tick had been. Do I need to take her in to a vet? Should I be worried about Lyme disease?

This small spot just looks like an inflammatory reaction and I wouldn't be concerned about the appearance at this point. You can apply a topical antibiotic like neosporin twice a day and monitor the area. If it increases in size or develops green or yellow discharge, or your dog becomes lethargic/decreased appetite then a visit to the vet is recommended.
