Why is my 6-month Staffie puppy coughing, choking, and losing weight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Staffordshire Bull Terrier | Female | unspayed | 6 months and 9 days old | 8 lbs

I've a 6 mth old staffie girl puppy. She isn't putting on weight and has started dreadful cough or choking sound. It seems to be getting worse. She's on Tail.com food. Hypoallergenic. I lost my back Russell from a heart problem and I'm scared the pup may have something similar. Aside from that..she's bright, eating and playing. Many thanks

Puppies can be prone to viruses and bacterial infections that cause coughing with respiratory symptoms. The only way to know is to have a vet check her out. They can listen to her heart to see if there is a murmur or a congenital problem that is evident. They can x ray the heart to look for any changes. If every thing looks good, then they can get your medicine to treat the cough and underlying cause to help her
