My cat has struvite stones. Will renal diet food help prevent them?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 20 lbs

Hi, I was wondering if renal diets also help with struvite stone formation. My cat who is on a struvite diet has now tired of his canned food (we've gone thru this before) and are now out of options. We also have a cat on a renal failure diet. The canned food we feed our cats is supplemental to dry food, also diet specific, but it would be great if my options for the one with stones include renal canned food. He won't tire so easily of the canned if I have more options for rotation. Thanks.

Hi there and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I can't speak for all renal diets out there, but the Hill's Prescription diet K/D and the Royal Canin Renal Support Prescription diet does contain a urinary acidifier in it to help prevent struvite stone formation. I hope this helps!
