My dog has stomach pain, diarrhea, fever, but vets can't diagnose?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Airedale Terrier | Male | neutered | 11 years and 2 months old | 73.8 lbs

My dog (male, Airedale terrier, 10) has suddenly become very sore in the stomach with diarrhoea, fever and seems really lethargic all within about 12 hours. The vets have ruled out pancreatitis and a object stuck in his digestive tract but haven't found anything else in blood tests, ultrasounds, fluid samples, x Rays or another other form of testing. They've only just now given him antibiotics but still have no idea what's causing him so much pain. We've now got a massive bill but no answers.

Unfortunately sometimes gastrointestinal disease can be difficult to diagnose, and even with all of the testing that has been done to Fergus the exact cause may be elusive. It may be necessary for you at this point to consider abdominal surgery, what we call an "explore" in order to try to find the problem definitively. I know this is likely not what you wanted to hear, however this may likely be your best chance for getting an answer.
