Why did my young female rabbit die suddenly with breathing issues and bleeding?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Rabbit | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 1 month old

Hello sadly I have woken up and found my female rabbit struggling to breath and making a wired noise I picked her up straight away and within a few minutes she passed away I noticed a small bit of blood around the vagina area she was fine yesterday morning. I'm not sure if it's the fake grass I put outside for them yesterday morning I don't know what's happened she is 14 months and I brought her 1 week ago with her male friend as well. He was stopping his feet on the ground and scratching door=(

Thank you for submitting your question regarding your Rosie. I am so sorry to hear of her passing. Obviously, I cannot tell you for certain what happened, but she could have had uterine cancer that spread to her lungs. This could account for the discharge you saw as well as her difficulty breathing. I just typically see it in rabbits over 3 years of age. She may have also experienced a severe respiratory tract infection. Monitor your male rabbit closely or consider having him checked out by a veterinarian to e sure that he is healthy. I am so sorry for your loss.
