My rescued dog is underweight and always hungry. How much to feed?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male

We rescued a pit who was skin and bones when we got him. We fed him a paste of dog food the first 3 days four times a day. Now he seems hungry all the time. We can visibly see that he is starting to gain weight back. But I am afraid of over feeding him yet. What should I do?

Well done on making such progress! Be sure to keep him dewormed monthly for at least 3 months and feed him up gradually, I would tend to feed at the feeding guideline for his actual weight plus 15-20%, reassessed every 14days in order to encourage gradual weight gain and strength whilst allowing his system to adjust. A probiotic/fiber supplement such as fortiflora can be helpful to promote healthy digestive balance also
