My dog ate a used Salonpas patch. Why is he vomiting and lethargic?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 4 years and 1 month old | 30 lbs

We caught our 30 lb. dog chewing on a previously worn "Salonpas pain patch with 4% lidocaine a day or 2 ago. Tonight he vomited after he ate and drank water Earlier this evening he was just laying around, not energized like usual. Will he be ok?

If Buddy didn’t ingest the patch I think the vomiting and lethargy are unrelated. From what I can find these patches do not contain much lidocaine and if it was previously worn there was probably very little medication left. Buddy could safely be given up to 27 mg of lidocaine. If he ate part of the patch I suppose it could cause a partial obstruction, although this seems unlikely. If he vomits again or develops diarrhea I’d recommend seeing a vet to rule out other gastrointestinal problems.
