My old cat meows constantly after companion died. Is she sick or grieving?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 16 years and 5 months old | 8 lbs

My cat’s companion a little over a month ago and ever since he passed she will not cease her meowing. It’s constant for hours on end. Is there something wrong she’s trying to communicate or is she grieving?

She may be grieving but at her age I would worry there is an imbalance with her thyroid gland. A cat gland can become hyperactive and when the levels rise, they will eat and lose weight and meow at night and roam randomly. Your vet can check the level with a blood test to be sure
