Why won't my senior dog walk on walks and tuck his tail?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 11 years and 6 months old | 95 lbs

For the past 2 days when I take my dog for his walk after about a block or two he would completely stop walking and would not move at all. I noticed his tail is tucked under and nothing I do will get him to move. What is going on with him and why doesn't he want to walk? I have tried giving him treats but it's not helping. The other day we were at a corner for an hour and I couldn't get him to move. Now I'm afraid to walk him fearing I can't get him home. Help!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Joshua! Since Joshua is a senior dog I would start with a Vet exam to rule out a medical reason. He could have arthritis, be painful or have neck or back pain. I would also want to be sure his heart is ok and he isn't anemic. Labs can develop larygneal problems as they age making them more heat intolerant and have trouble breathing. Also neurologic hind leg issues are prevalent in older labs. In the meantime I wouldn't walk him far since he is so large. Significantly cut your walks way shorter than where he is now stopping. I wish you and Joshua the best!
