My puppy has diarrhea. Is Pepto Bismol safe for a 5-month-old?

Is Pepto Bismol safe to give to my 5 month old puppies if they have diarrhea?

Hi and thank you for using PetCoach. If your puppies are having mild diarrhea that has not lasted over 6 hours, eating fine and acting normally with no vomiting, then it can be safe. However, it is just a band aid and does not fix the underlying problem as to WHY they are having diarrhea. If the diarrhea has persisted longer than a few hours, the puppies are not eating, they are vomiting or lethargic, I would not give Pepto Bismol.     Hi, while Pepto Bismol is not toxic to dogs, it is often not effective to stop vomiting or diarrhea. So yes, you can give it, but it may not help. If your dog is having a problem you can repost with some more details and maybe we can help you more. Good luck!

Unfortunately it's illegal from us to recommend using an OTC medication such as pepto bismol without seeing Penelope in person. I strongly recommend having her seen by a vet today if possible. It's never a good idea to use an OTC human medication on a puppy unless specifically prescribed by a vet. Her vet can let you know if this is safe or not, and can treat her diarrhea. Best of luck.

It sounds like your dog has a case of colitis, or an inflammation of the colon, resulting in an increase in the volume and frequency of stools. Colitis can be caused by many different things. Some of the more common causes include intestinal parasites, dietary indiscretion, food intolerance, irritable bowel disease, pancreatitis, a foreign body/blockage and viruses. Because Max is so young I would recommend taking him in to your vet to be examined. They will likely want to check a stool sample and may recommend some lab work, a dietary change, and/or antibiotics. Until then, continue feeding a bland diet like you are. As far as giving Pepto, I usually do not recommend it. It can mask the problem causing the diarrhea which could make it take longer to get Max well. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Boop by Petco. Hi, thanks for using Boop by Petco! Poor Doggy! I would fast him for 12-24 hours and with hold water for 6 hours. If there is no vomiting in the 6 hours only offer water in small amounts. If he tolerates the water, no vomiting, then you can restart feeding at the 12-24 hour mark with a bland do\iet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. If at anytime he restarts vomiting or won't eat he needs to see a Vet. Causes of vomiting and diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral (especially parvo) and bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, toxin ingestion, pancreatitis, food allergy/intolerance or a reaction to a new food/treat/human food. Most of the time we never find the exact cause. Pepto is a human drug and is used in animals off label. If he is vomiting severely and won't hold down water he may just vomit up oral medications. Can I give my dog pepto bismol for diarrhea?
Here is a link that discusses pepto bismol use in dogs: https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/dog/pepto-bismol/ As long as the patient is acting fine otherwise, no blood in the diarrhea, and is not vomiting then I usually recommend fasting for 1 meal (do not withhold water), and then start feeding small amounts of boiled chicken and rice in place of their normal kibble. If the diarrhea doesn’t improve within a few days or if any other symptoms emerge then I would encourage you to have her evaluated by your veterinarian. Can I give my 11 year old pug pepto bismol for diarrhea? If so should I give liquid or pill form?
I would not recommend Pepto bishop for diarrhea, as the ingredients are often not well tolerated in dogs. You can feed some canned pumpkin or boiled chicken and rice to see if that helps but if it's not improving she may need to see your vet for treatment.

Can pets have pepto Bismol? Amount per pound?
Yes, dogs can have it. To treat acute diarrhea, 0.5 mL/lb (1 US teaspoon for every 10 pounds your dog weighs) can be given every 4 to 6 hours for 5 days. The dosage can be higher depending on how severe the symptoms are and other contributing factors, with a maximum recommended dose of 0.9 mL/lb to be given every 6 to 8 hours. Shake the bottle well before use.

Unfortunately, by law it is illegal for the experts at Boop by Petco to recommend any drug, including OTC drugs, without seeing the animal in person first. That's because doing so requires a veterinary client patient relationship which cannot be achieved via an internet forum. In addition, the experts cannot say for certain if a specific drug is safe for your dog. If your puppy is in pain, I would have him seen by a vet right away so he can be examined for the source of the pain, and the vet can treat it him for it.

Benji has diarrhea but no other symptoms. I started him on bolied chicken and rice. Is it okay for me to give him some pepto bismol? If so how much can i give him?
I do not recommend giving Benji Pepto Bismol, as it can lead to toxicity. See the following link for more information https://www.petpoisonhelpline.com/uncategorized/so-what-about-those-hidden-potential-toxins/ IF the diarrhea doesn't resolve soon, or if he develops other signs such as nausea, decreased appetite or decreased energy, have Benji seen by a vet. Take a fecal sample from him in with you in case the vet wants to run tests on it.

My dog is under the deworming medication and is having diarrhea now. Can I give him pepto?
Deworming medicine can cause diarrhea in dogs, but it should pass in about 24 hours. I would not give him pepto for this, as in dogs it is used for diarrhea caused by something the dog has eaten. I would monitor him for now, and if he still has diarrhea in 24 hours, bring him into your vet. You can try feeding him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet.

I have an eight-year-old intact male this had. Diarrhea on and off since Friday his stools are loose but not watery I've given him Pepto Bismol and it seems to help he is eating he's drinking and playful what else can be done
I'm sorry to hear that Verijo has been having some diarrhea, but it is encouraging that he is eating, drinking and acting normally. Diarrhea can be caused by a number of issues, including parasites, viruses, gastroenteritis from eating new foods or people food, among many other conditions. I do not typically recommend giving Pepto Bismol to dogs since it contains salicylates (similar to those in aspirin) and can lead to bleeding issues over time. Dosing once or twice is unlikely to cause issues, but I would not recommend continuing it. Instead, try withholding food for 12-24 hours, then offer a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice (8 cups divided into 2-3 smaller meals) for several days. After this time, gradually mix Verijo's normal diet with the chicken and rice over another 5-7 days. If his diarrhea continues or worsens, if he becomes lethargic, vomits, or stops eating, a trip to the vet will be in order for further evaluation. I hope that he feels better soon!
