My dog with CHF ate biscuits. Is his increased coughing from sodium?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Male | neutered | 8 years and 4 months old | 6 lbs

My dog has CHF and is on a low sodium diet. He got into the other dogs biscuits few hrs ago and is coughing more. Would this be the cause of him coughing increase?

Sodium does not seem to make as much of a difference in dogs as it does in humans and does not seem to affect blood pressure as quickly as a couple of hours, so I would not expect that the sodium in the biscuits is causing the increase in Coco's coughing. If Coco was very excited about getting into the biscuits or if he ate a large number of them, that could contribute to an increase in coughing, but I would expect it to be temporary, so if Coco continues coughing, I would certainly recommend having your veterinarian examine him to determine if he needs some additional treatment. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
