My dog has a deep paw cut, is licking it, and seems lethargic. Vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 1 year old | 50 lbs

I’m watching someone’s dog and noticed a cut on her right front paw, near where her wrist would be. (I don’t know the correct dog term) she’s been very lethargic today and sleeping a lot, but doesn’t seem to be in pain while walking. She’s been lickin the wound a lot to clean it. I don’t know how serious this is and what I should do to make sure that she is ok.

Hi there, That's a fairly deep wound and I would recommend it be repaired. I would take her to a veterinarian so they can sedate and suture the wound closed. She also may need antibiotics and pain medications. I hope that helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.

I would take Maggie to the veterinarian as soon as possible. The lethargy you describe could be due to her having an infection. The cut should be evaluated and possibly closed with sutures. She should be started on antibiotics and anti inflammatory medicine too. Good luck with Maggie and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
