My dog's arthritis pill crumbles. How can I ensure proper dosing?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | West Highland White Terrier | Female | spayed | 11 years and 1 month old | 24 lbs

My vet has told me to give my westie a fifth of paracetamol twice a day for her arthritis. I am having awful trouble cutting the pill into fifths as it keeps crumbling. And am concerned she is getting odd doses. How do you cut a paracetamol into fiths. I do have a pill splitter.

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Cutting a pill into 1/5 has got to be very tricky even with a pill cutter! I would recommend consulting with Meg's veterinarian about getting her on a different medication that is easy to dose and doesn't require splitting the pill into small pieces. There are a variety of pain medications out there and available for arthritis that are much better and safer to use than paracetamol such as Rimadyl, Galliprant, or Previcox. I would ask your veterinarian if Meg could be transitioned over to a better alternative. I hope this helps!
