My dog's paw is raw and painful from borax. How can I help it heal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Cairn Terrier | Male | neutered | 13 years and 7 months old | 13 lbs

My 14yo cairn terrier stepped in some borax dust (outside for ants) on Monday afternoon. I have washed thoroughly and he didnt ingest. Left paw is healed and ok. Right front paw still has a small red/raw spot and is painful for him. I have used antibacterial ointment and kept wrapped, giving 1/2 benadryl, and this weekend will use a cone. What else can i do to ease discomfort and promote healing? Thank you!!!

Hi there, You can bathe Ranger's foot in an oatmeal/aloe/epsom salt mix which will help soothe the area and promote healing. You can also apply raw honey on the sore to help it heal faster. I hope that helps and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
