Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Toy Poodle | Female | spayed | 5 years and 7 months old | 5 lbs

Using triflexis but planning switch to Simparica(flea&tick prev)&Heartgard(heartworm prev).Nikki's unknown allergies, eating fish food for almost 4 months, just started using Earthbath oatmeal&aloe shampoo(fragrance free)&will start taking omega suppl soon.Currently licks her paws a lot so I would like to know if Simparica,Heartgard&shampoo are good choices.I read oral meds could cause itching but I prefer chews, oatmeal is soothing but what if she's allergic to grains? Comments please. Thanks !

Hi there and thank you for your post! Those choices are great- Simparica is an excellent flea and tick preventative and heartgard is an excellent heartworm preventative. The shampoo you mentioned is good too. If she is itching or licking her paws frequently, she may have an allergy to something in the environment (like a seasonal allergy) or she may have a food allergy. You should be okay with the Simparica but you may want to request unflavored HeartGard in case she has a food allergy. Typically if an animal is allergic to grains, it is typically when they ingest them. If you are concerned about the oatmeal shampoo, you may want to try a shampoo that is aloe based instead. I hope this helps!
