My pregnant dog is overdue and not in labor. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Female | unspayed | 4 years old | 35 lbs

I have a pregnant dog that I believe is overdue and she is making me start to worry. She doesn’t have any signs of distress but also no signs of the first stage of labor. The date of the first breeding was 03/29/18 and date of last breeding 04/02/18

I recommend an ultrasoun as soon as possible in order to determine if there are puppies present and if they are still alive, Normal labour and delivery is triggered in part by hormones secreted from the puppies and if there is only a single pup, or if the pups have died before delivery then this may not happed and a section may be required in order to remove them, Survival is very poor beyond 5 days overdue but the risk of infection and reduced fertlity in the future increases dramatically over time
