My dog has a swollen lump below a healed wound. Is it infected?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shorthaired Pointer | Male | neutered | 1 year and 11 months old | 50 lbs

My dog got into a fight with my friends dog. He came out mostly unharmed, but he had one puncture wound I was concerned with. I kept it clean, dry, bandaged and antibiotic ointment applied. He has healed up and we took off the wrap. The fight was a few weeks ago and now, despite being healed, he has a swollen egg shape lump a few cm below the healed wound. I'm concerned that it's an infection. I had thought it was hopefully just fluid filling any negative space under his skin, now I'm worried.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Bo! I swelling below the wound can be from inflamed and thickened tissues, from the bandage being too tight, from fluid build up under the skin (seroma) or infection (abscess). Ideally Bo should be seen by your Vet. If you can't do that then warm compress the area twice daily and if it doesn't resolve in a few days have him seen. I wish Bo the best!
