Cat in pain, not eating after abscess. Is this normal? What to do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 11.3 lbs

My cat went to the vet Monday for multiple abscess treatment. They kept him until Tuesday. He's been home for nearly three days, but he is in terrible pain and can't sleep. He meows all day, not really eating, wants to lay in a dirty litter box and can barely walk. Is this normal? I wasn't told of anything to do at home to care for the wounds, but to let them heal. Is there anything I can do to help with the healing process?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Mr. Cheeks! I think I need more details to be helpful about where and how many abscesses he had. My worry is that is is now Friday and he isn't better. Cats can't go a long time with out eating well. What you are describing is NOT normal. I recommend having him seen today before the weekend for a recheck so he isn't suffering through the weekend. I wish Mr. Cheeks the best!
