Dog allergies: How to soothe puffy eyes & stop pawing eyes at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 70 lbs

I’ve taken my GSD to the vet for his allergies before and they have suggested high dosage of allergy medicine but I cannot schedule an other appointment until the end of the month. Is there any “at-home” remedies that’ll keep the inflammation down? Any way to prevent him from pawing at his eyes? He doesn’t appear to be in any type of pain, acting normal as can be aside from his puffy eyes.

An e-collar (cone) would be the best way to prevent scratching or rubbing. The end off the cone should extend at least two inches beyond the tip of the nose. Ask your veterinarian for a dose for an over the counter antihistamine, such as Benadryl or Zyrtec. Either can be used In dogs to control itching and other symptoms of allergies.
