My finch's voice is hoarse. Mite treatment failed. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Bird | Unknown - Bird | Male | unneutered | 3 months and 24 days old | 0.025 lbs

One of my high society finches has a hoarse voice that sounds like laryngitis. Read that mites are common in the air sac so used some Moxidexrin but the problem was not alleviated. Any ideas to help?

Some illnesses, functional problems of the throat, foreign bodies, fungal infections and even malnutrition can cause changes to the voice in addition to exposure to mites. If mite treatment didn't work, it may be time to take Rose into your vet for a complete exam and further testing. They may recommend bloodwork or an X-ray to rule out illness, nutritional issues or obstructions, and can take a look to see if they notice any structural changes or obstructions. Keeping Rose calm, eating and drinking, and separating her from any other birds if she appears ill is best until you can get into a vet to have her examined.
