My snake is wheezing after shedding. Is it a respiratory infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

. I hadn’t handled Kaa since his eyes had gone Cloudy, signifying shed time. However, it has been around 1.5 weeks since he looked like he was going into shed and he has returned to normal, possibly abit dull in colour but not tremendously. Since all seemed well enough, I went to have a closer inspection of him and when I reached to pick him up he seemed to breathe out heavily, almost a wheeze. I’ve researched and it’s a possible RI? Humidity is kept at 55-60% and slightly increased during shed.

A respiratory infection will need to be diagnosed and treated by your veterinarian or a vet experienced in treating reptiles. Antibiotics are typically required to treat RI. Other symptoms include lethargy, loss of appetite, discharge from the nose or mouth and gaping (resting with the mouth wide open). During the exam, your vet can examine Kaa's eyes to diagnose retained eye caps. He or she should be able to remove them. In the meantime, monitor temperature and humidity. Soak Kaa in a warm bath to facilitate shedding if there are still "bits" remaining.
