Why is my hamster clicking and trembling? Is it a respiratory issue?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Small Animal | Unknown - Small Animal | Male | unneutered

I have had a male dwarf Campbell hamster for about 2 months. I discovered him today to have this "clicking" sound, and when he does it, his entire body trembles along with it. He has been doing this for about three hours, but he is eating, burrowing, and tunneling through the pipes. I am not sure whether it is respiratory problems (he was fine yesterday). Please help!

If you notice any increase in respiratory rate, nasal discharge, coughing, or sneezing, then this is probably a respiratory infection. Respiratory infections are fairly common in hamsters. If Chestnut is not exhibiting any of these symptoms and is otherwise doing ok, I would just monitor him for now. If you do suspect a respiratory infection Chestnut will need to be examined by your vet and placed on antibiotics. I hope this helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Best of luck.
