Dog eye infection: Can 2-day vet delay cause damage? What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Male | unneutered | 4 years and 7 months old | 120 lbs

I'm almost 100% sure my dog has an eye infection hes got red, puffy, watery, and goopy stuff in one of his eyes and hes pawing at it a lot. I plan on taking him to the vet but cannot for a day or 2 due to pay period is there any permanent damage that can happen in that time? If so is there anything I can do to prevent damage until I get him to the vet?

Hi and thanks for posting on Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Severe ocular infections can lead to damage of the eye if not treated. Unless this issue has been going on for quite some time, waiting an additional 2 days shouldn't be a big issue. There is not a lot you can do for this from home. You can go to your local pet store and get a small bottle of saline eye rinse, but he will likely need to be on antibiotics if an infection is present. I hope this helps!
