My dog had diarrhea, now has slimy poop & won't drink. Is this normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 25 lbs

My dog had explosive diarrhea on Monday and Tuesday morning. Tuesday around noon, I fed him chicken with rice and pumpkin. He only pooped a little that night after 2 servings of food. Today in the morning, he pooped solid with a slimy substance on his stool. Is this normal? Or should I be concerned? He is also not wanting water but other than that he is acting normal.

Hi! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The mucous indicates inflammation in the colon which occurs commonly with diarrhea. Since Dodger has diarrhea and is on the road to recovery I think you are ok. If the mucous and/or diarrhea persists I’d bring him the vet for metronidazole. I wish Dodger a speedy recovery!
