Is walking safe for my senior dog with vestibular disease? How far?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Border Collie | Female | spayed | 13 years old | 39 lbs

My 13 year old border collie had a stroke. She now has canine vestibular disease. Is walking good for her? If so how far? We use to walk 8 to 10 miles daily. Weather permitting. She's at the door wanting to go out.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Abbey! If Abbey's vestibular signs have resolved and she can walk without falling over, her eyes have stopped moving abnormally (nystagmus) and she isn't nauseous anymore she can live a normal life and continue to do whatever activities she did before. If she still has symptoms then I wouldn't push her until they resolve as she would be feeling very dizzy and likely couldn't go very far. I wish Abbey the best!
