Why is my spayed female dog leaving yellow spots and smelling fishy?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Labrador | Female | spayed

My 7 year old female, spayed Labrador has started leaving several very small, just bigger than pea-sized yellow dots on the carpet. I'm unsure whether it's vaginal or anal discharge. There's no obvious changes in behaviour or obsessive licking etc, but she has been smelling increasingly fishy over recent weeks. Any ideas?

It sounds like Izzy may have a urinary tract infection. I would recommend taking her to see the vet and have a urine run to check for an infection. She may require antibiotics for it. The fishy smell sounds like anal glands. While you are at the vet they can express her anal glands. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
