My dog has cancer and swelling. How to make her comfortable?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Female | spayed | 9 years and 6 months old | 165 lbs

My dog is on prednisone for Hemangiosarcoma and now she is terribly swollen in her abdomen and hind legs. What can I do? I've had her to my vet and also to the experts at Ohio State. I know she doesn't have long but can I make her comfortable and reduce the swelling?

This depends on the underlying cause of the welling. In some cases water tablets/diuretics may help but I would be concerned with her history that there may be a physical mass which is putting pressure on the draining blood vessels and lymphatics preventing the fluid from moving out her abdomen and legs in which case this will not respond to medical treatment and euthanasia would be strongly advised before clots or severe infection develops in the swollen tissue
