Can my dog travel by car for a short trip after ACL surgery?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 9 years and 9 months old | 75.61 lbs

My dog had a partially torn anterior cruciate ligament, he had surgery two weeks ago and has been with a carer in London. We are having trouble getting him back as the carer wants to now keep him and is saying he can't travel. Would he be ok in our car for an hour to get him home if we lift him in and out and he has a bed and a lot of room within the car? His vet said his recovery is going very well and he can walk again. Want to ensure that he is ok to travel in a car for a short period of time

Many of my patients travel from out of town for surgery at my hospital, cruciate repairs included. As long as he doesn’t jump in and out of the car I don’t see any reason to withhold travel. Best of luck and I hope his recovery continues to do well. Thank you for using Pet Coach.
