My new kitten has eye discharge. Is it too young to be away from mom?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered

My family recently got a kitten. It's small and nobody knows how old it is. I do not believe that it is old enough to be away from it's mom. If you have a guess as to it's age that'd be helpful. Also he has a lot of clear discharge from his eyes and we are having to clean them multiple times a day. Anything we can do to help with this?

Hello, I would guess that Sammie is at least 4 weeks old. He will do fine away from his mom at this age, but will still require alot of attention from you (feeding, cleaning, and socializing). It also sounds like he could have an upper respiratory infection or eye infection which is causing the discharge from his eyes. Kittens that are weak and stressed can be predisposed to developing secondary upper respiratory and eye infections. Continue to bottle feed Sammie and start offering soft cat food. You may continue to wipe the discharge from his eyes with moist cotton balls. If he is not improving, then have him evaluated by his veterinarian immediately. Hope this helps and best of luck.
