Why is my puppy weak, crying, and breathing shallow after shots?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

My 10 week puppy has just had final injection and kennel cough. She was fine when we got hone but now she is crying when you touch her, too weak to move and her breathing appears to be shallow

If her breathing is shallow then she needs to be examined by a vet immediately. Call your vet or take her to an emergency clinic so she can be examined and determine if she is having a reaction to the vaccine. If she is just painful then your vet can give her an anti-inflammatory to help with the discomfort.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Lethargy is not uncommon for the first 24-48 hours post vaccination. However, this should improve a bit after that so if that is not the case have George evaluated by your veterinarian to ensure nothing more serious is going on. I think he will most likely be fine. Good luck and have a great day!

He may be experiencing some pain from the vaccine. It should resolve within 24-48 hours. Otherwise, you could ask your vet for an anti-inflammatory or pain medication if it really seems to be bothering him.

It is completely normal for dogs to be more lethargic the day of a vaccination but also in a little pain. I would talk to your vet about getting an anti-inflammatory that is safe for dogs to help with the vaccine pain. If you notice any difficulty breathing, excessive vomiting or swelling of any area then I would take Sheldon to a veterinarian immediately as this is a vaccine reaction. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
