German Shepherd yelping, nasal drip, changed bark. Ear infection?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 1 month old | 85 lbs

My German Shepherd has been yelping in pain since last night when her snout is touched. She acts like her ears are bothering her. She has a nasal drip as well and her bark has changed to more of a bark/Yelp when she tried to bark at the neighbors this morning. Vet today gave her meds Incase of an ear infection but said her ears looked fine. (Cephelexin, prednisolne, and Quadritop ointment) im worried it’s something els but I can’t afford another vet visit. Does it sound like an ear infection?

If her ears are bothering her, there is certainly a problem with them so the ointment should make a difference. Antibiotics will help if there is concurrent bacterial infection and prednisolone has an anti inflammatory effect. So you have medications that should help against a few symptoms and conditions. Perhaps she will feel better today. The other thing I would keep in mind is if she could have inhaled something like a grass seed. These are very commmon where I live at this time of the year. So if she seems to be getting better continue with treatment, if she is getting worse or not improving have her reassessed. All the best and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach !
