Why won't my dog eat in hot weather? Is loss of appetite normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Bulldog | Female | spayed | 7 years and 6 months old | 48 lbs

My English Bulldog Gemma isn’t eating normally. I’ve recently moved to the valley and so I’m keeping her inside where it’s cool. I took her outside and she only ate a little bit of what she normally eats. I leave her outside at night to sleep out when it’s cool and she’s doing fine with that. I got her from the LA shelter so I haven’t had her for long. And I don’t know how she normally gets. But she does love eating. A lot. She’s been sleeping fine too. And she’s pooping fine from what I know.

Hi ! It might be that Gemma needs to adjust to the heat. I would give her some time, we often don’t eat as much when the weather is hot. Just make sure you stick to a routine, offer her food and leave it down for 20 minutes then remove it untile the next meal. Always leave plenty of fresh water available and if worried have her checked over. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach !
