My dog's tail got stuck in a door and is bleeding. Vet or wait?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Male | unneutered | 6 years old | 95 lbs

My Shepard just got his tail stuck in the door. It didn't take any of the tail itself off but there's a decent size chunk missing from the side. I have cleaned it well and bandaged it, I also gave him 500mg of Tylenol (he's 95lbs). He was hurt and shook up but he seems to be doing just fine now. Tail a waging and everything. It's still bleeding a bit, not as bad though, this bandage is definitely helping. Should I be heading to the vet/ER or can I wait, monitor, and decide later if it's not bett

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Ziggy! Tails that get stuck in the door are at risk for degloving injuries and are very tough to have heal due to the mobility of the tail and the dog wanting to lick and chew it. Sadly a lot of times these injuries result in an amputation of part of the tail. I would have Ziggy seen by your Vet, if it isn't bleeding badly I don't think you need to go to the ER but make an appointment early this week with your Vet. I wish Ziggy the best!
