My cat lost his meow and sounds raspy. Is it a health concern?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 6 years and 5 months old | 10 lbs

My cat seems to have lost his voice/meow. He purrs fine, not lethargic, eyes and nose are fine. He is acting normal but hasn’t had a a meow in about a week. Just a raspy sound when trying to meow. Typically he is pretty chatty. Is this something to worry about?

Poor Nixon. He could have develop a mild laryngitis from the changing of seasons, talking too much, an upper respiratory infection, and other causes. You could try Benadryl twice a day to see if that helps. See link below. If he isn't improving or starts to get worse (lethargy, not eating, etc), I would have your vet take a look. Your vet will be able to prescribe antibiotics if needed. I hope this helps! https://www.petcoach.co/canigive/cat/benadryl/#
