My dog's incision is red and oozy after surgery. What should I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 12 years and 11 months old | 28 lbs

My dog had a benign tumor removed on Thursday. His incision is super red and oozy and I’m worried it might be infected or that he is having some kind of reaction. Can’t call our vet because it is Sunday, but don’t want to rush him to the emergency vet if not absolutely necessary. I am planning on taking him to the vet first thing in the morning. Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated. He can’t get comfortable and it is driving him crazy. He has had his cone on 24/7 since the surgery.

This does look very moist and like an infection is starting. If your veterinarian sent home any pain medication, make sure to continue using it as directed. If you didn’t get any, make sure to get some tomorrow morning along with some antibiotics. You can use hydrogen peroxide or warm soapy water to gently dab on the area and then gently pat it dry. Apply some topical antibiotic ointment or cream such as Neodporin or Neosporin Plus which has topical lidocaine. Make sure the cone stays on as he will want to lick or bite at this. Try to get in to your vet first thing in the morning for a recheck.
