My puppy is lethargic, won't wake up, and shaking. What's wrong?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 16 days old | 3 lbs

My puppy was laying down earlier and he started to cry then he went to sleep and he doesn’t really wake up, I’ve tried everything to keep him up but he just looks at me and then he goes back to sleep. Just now he made a weird noise with his nose and he started to shake it. Is wrong with him?

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Jace. I am concerned that he was experiencing an episode of low blood sugar. It is common in puppies as small as he is. If he is still acting so lethargic, I would recommend putting karo syrup (or maple syrup or honey) on his gums and he will need to see an emergency veterinarian. If he is back to normal now, monitor him closely and apply the syrup if you ever notice these signs in him again. Provide kibble for him at all times so that he never goes long between meals. Of course, something else could be wrong that your veterinarian could determine based in his exam. I hope this information helps!
