Why does my cat have a hard fur clump stuck to its back skin?

My cats back have a big clump of fur that's hard to the touch that's stuck to the skin what can this be

It’s very difficult to see clearly as both photos are very dark and don’t really show the extent of the area you are talking about. You can try uploading a brighter photo. This may just be a large area of matted fur. This can be common if the cat does not or can not reach the area to groom. That is common in overweight cats. I cannot tell about your kitty’s body condition from the photo. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
