My dog has an itchy, inflamed recessed vulva. What are my options?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 8 years and 5 months old | 45 lbs

Hi, my dog just finished two courses of antibiotics due to recurring UTI (proteus and ecoli). Her vulva is itchy, red and inflamed. She likely has a recessed vulva and there seems to be sebum coming out of the pores in the folded skin. I clean it with raw apple cider vinegar and Chlorhexidine. Is that fine? Will I need to clean it regularly indefinitely? What else can I do apart from surgery? Thank you.

Aside from the vulvoplasty surgery which can be very successful, make sure your pet is at a healthy weight. If she is at all overweight, that can cause the skin folds to become deeper and more difficult to manage.
