My puppy's gums bleed during tug of war. Is this normal teething?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Retriever | Male | neutered | 4 months and 19 days old

Whenever we play tug of war with Jasper (his favorite game, we play with a rope) there ends up being blood on the rope. He is losing teeth which we assume are his baby teeth, so would that be why? We don't play rough, usually I just hold on the other end and he pulls.

Jasper will be losing his baby teeth for about another 6 weeks (until he is 6 months old). His adult teeth are currently pushing out his baby teeth, so his gums are more sensitive and easier to bleed right now. If the bleeding continues after his adult teeth are all in, I would certainly recommend having your veterinarian examine his gums to make sure they are healthy. Good luck! I hope that was helpful and answered your question. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
