My dog has a collapsed trachea. How can I prevent pneumonia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

For a dog with collapsed trachea, what can be done to prevent pneumonia? I’ve had a few small dogs that had collapsed trachea but never died from it, until I had Ms. Bu.

Prevent aspiration of food or water by using an elevated feeder. Avoid using collars or leashes around the neck. Discuss cough medications and bronchodilators with your veterinarian. Keep your dog lean. Obese dogs have more complications related to tracheal collapse than slim dogs.
