Why is my new mama cat nursing older kittens? Will her own get milk?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Female

we have a litter of 3 kittens who are 1 month old, been doing just fine with mama and all until day before second cat has litter of 5 , second mama keeps getting in the box and nursing older kittens, fist mama does not seem to care. Second mama will nurse them when I put her in with her own, am concerned the older kittens will take all her milk, and do not know why she seems to prefer them to her own.I think she is confused, and so am I !

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! She is likely confused. I would confine the new mama in a room with her kittens so they are taken care of appropriately. That way she can bond in peace and quiet and not get confused by the other kittens. I wish you the best!
