Dog's tail healed from surgery, but still in pain. Is it neuralgia?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 2 years and 3 months old | 13 lbs

Pet had a partial tail removal in January due to an infection from a cut. Vet says tail has healed, but pet is still in a lot of pain and agitated. He has been on and off of pain killers and antibiotics since the surgery. Is there possibly something else going on, or is thus how he will be for now on?

Hi there and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach to address your concern. If the pain is still in the tail, it may be due to the nerves when they were cut during the surgery. This can sometimes lead to the development of what we call neuralgia, which can be targeted with other medications such as Gabapentin. If you have not tried this medication yet, I would recommend discussing this with your veterinarian to see if this helps more. Neuralgia can last for quite some time and sometimes never goes away. I hope this helps guide you in the right direction. Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns and I would be more than happy to help you further.
